Tears are Prayers Too

Psalm 6: 6 (NLT), “I am worn out from sobbing. All night I flood my bed with weeping, drenching it with my tears.”

Have you ever felt so distressed that you can’t express it in words? You want to pour your heart out to God, but tears have replaced words. Now you’re left wondering if God can help you. But you can’t seem to pray. When you try to pray, all you can do is cry.

Psalm 56:8, “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.”

Even when we are deeply saddened, crying our eyes out, and unable to pray, God hears words through our tears. God heard Ismael crying in the desert (Genesis 21:17), the Israelites in Egypt (Exodus 3:9), and Hannah in the temple (1 Samuel 1:10). All of whom were deeply grieved waiting on the Lord to answer.

Psalm 39:12, “Hear my prayer, O Lord! Listen to my cries for help! Don’t ignore my tears.”

God will not ignore your tears. He’s listening and will save you from your troubles (Psalm 34:17).

1 Peter 5: 7, Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.”

We’re not perfect, we all have a “valley moment.” But we must remember that we can’t fall victim to our circumstance, whatever it may be. We can’t fall victim to what gives us grief.  Otherwise our sadness will turn to anger, we’ll lash out, or we’ll internalize our feelings resulting in some form of depression. Either way, we must “let go and let God.” God cares for us, understands us, because he made us (Psalm 139:13).

Psalm 30: 5, “…Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.”

When you feel sadness covering your heart, you think all hope is lost, and all you can do is cry, then cry! Sometimes we need a good cry even when we don’t know why. But God knows. Put your faith and trust in God. He knows every problem and sees every tear and just as night turns into day, your circumstance will change.

Dear God, sometimes when we’re sad, we try to pray to You but can’t. The words are there yet the pain is so strong we’re unable to put our feelings in words. So, all we can do is cry.  But Lord, your word says, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust,” (Psalm 91:1-2; NKJV). You are our refuge and fortress and because we trust in You, please keep our emotions steady and give us peace because your peace surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Thank you Lord for seeing my cries and “hearing” my tears.

In Jesus Name
